LC, SC, ST, FC, MPO/MTP — the connector determines density, how the cable latches, and how many fibers it carries. Here's what each one is and where it's used.

LC is a small form-factor connector roughly half the size of SC, which is exactly why it dominates modern data centers: smaller connectors mean more ports per switch and patch panel. Most LC assemblies are duplex, pairing a transmit and receive fiber.
SC uses a simple push-pull latch and remains common in enterprise, telecom, and passive optical networks. ST uses a bayonet twist-lock and shows up in older multimode LANs. FC uses a threaded screw coupling that resists vibration, so it's found in test-and-measurement and high-vibration settings.
MPO (multi-fiber push-on) connectors pack many fibers — commonly 8, 12, 24, up to 72 — into a single ferrule, which is how high-density backbone and spine-leaf trunks are built. MTP is a high-performance, brand-name version of MPO; the two intermate and share the same polarity rules. See the MPO/MTP polarity guide for Type A/B/C.
Single-fiber connectors come in simplex (one fiber) or duplex (a bonded transmit/receive pair). Endface polish also matters: UPC (ultra physical contact) and APC (angled physical contact, 8°) reduce back reflection — APC is common on single-mode PON and is not intermateable with UPC.
