MPO / MTP polarity.

In a multi-fiber MPO/MTP system, polarity is what guarantees each transmit fiber lands on the right receive fiber end to end. Get it wrong and links don't come up. Here are Type A, B, and C — and how to choose.

First: MPO vs MTP

MPO (multi-fiber push-on) is the connector standard that carries multiple fibers — commonly 8, 12, or 24 — in one ferrule. MTP is a high-performance, brand-name version of MPO with tighter mechanical tolerances. They intermate and share identical polarity concepts, so everything below applies to both.

The three polarity types

TypeConnectionAdaptersWhere used
Type AStraight-through: position 1 → position 1Key-up to key-downNeeds a crossover elsewhere in the channel
Type BReversed: position 1 → last positionKey-up to key-upPreferred for modern parallel optics
Type CPairs-flipped: adjacent pairs swappedKey-up to key-downUncommon; legacy duplex transitions

What each type actually does

Type A is a straight-through cable — the fiber in position 1 at one end lines up with position 1 at the other. Because that doesn't swap transmit and receive, a crossover has to happen somewhere else in the channel.

Type B reverses the order: position 1 maps to the last position. This keeps patching consistent on both ends and naturally aligns transmit and receive for parallel QSFP/OSFP transceivers, which is why it's generally preferred in current data center designs.

Type C flips each adjacent pair of fibers. It looks similar to Type A but with pairs swapped, and it's now uncommon — mostly seen in legacy duplex (like early 10G) transitions.

How to choose

Need MPO/MTP trunks in a specific polarity?

Tri-Valley Optics builds MPO/MTP trunk assemblies in 12F/24F/48F/72F with Type A, B, or C polarity, plenum or riser rated, low-loss IL certified — most orders shipped in about 2 business days with a lifetime warranty.
